Nigerian Navy Dismantles Illegal Refining Sites, Seizes Crude Oil in Ondo State.

The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda has successfully dismantled nine illegal refining sites in the Obenla community, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. The operation also led to the destruction of 20,000 litres of crude oil and 15,000 litres of illegally refined diesel, suspected to be Automatic Gas Oil (AGO).

Commander of the Base, Navy Captain Aliyu Usman, briefed journalists on Thursday about the operation, which was conducted on January 6, 2025, following credible intelligence reports.

Details of the Operation

  • Discovery of Refining Sites:
  • "In continuation of the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to combat crude oil theft and illegal refining, the FOB in Igbokoda stormed a farmhouse used as an illegal refining camp in the Obenla community. We uncovered nine illegal refining sites within the sea area," said Captain Usman.
  • Evacuation by Perpetrators:
  • Upon arrival, the suspects had fled the scene, likely tipped off about the operation.
  • "The perpetrators fled in fear of arrest. However, we secured the area and discovered approximately 20,000 litres of stolen crude oil awaiting processing and 15,000 litres of refined AGO," Usman explained.

Navy’s Commitment to Environmental Protection

Captain Usman emphasized that the Navy remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate illegal refining activities and protect the environment from further degradation.

"This operation is yet another step in our efforts to clean up the environment and curb criminal acts against the Nigerian state. We will sustain these efforts until all illegalities are eradicated."

Community Sensitization and Warnings

The Commander also used the opportunity to educate Obenla community residents on the dangers of harboring illegal refining activities.

"We advise criminals to abandon these illegal practices and engage in legitimate businesses. The Nigerian Navy will not relent in its determination to stop all acts of illegality," Usman warned.

This operation marks a significant achievement in the Navy’s ongoing fight against crude oil theft and environmental pollution in the Niger Delta region.
