NOLLYWOOD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STEREOTYPING OF NIGERIANS AS DIABOLICAL PEOPLE- RENO OMOKRI
Nigerian author and social critic Reno Omokri has accused Nollywood of portraying Nigerians as diabolical people through its movies.
Omokri expressed his thoughts to his over 700 thousand followers on Twitter on Monday.
“I sometimes wonder if Nollywood is an appropriate name for the Nigerian movie industry. Perhaps Jujuwood would be a more fitting name. No other institution has been as responsible for the stereotyping of Nigerians as diabolical people as Nollywood!” Omokri stated.
The social critic argued that art imitates life. Therefore, movies should reflect the culture of the society. Drawing reference to the Hollywood movie, Fast and Furious, Omokri posits that the film will make you want to visit the country, unlike Nollywood movies that will make “you want to run far away from Nigeria!”
He also recounted an incident that happened in 2011, where a lady embarrassed Omokri and veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo because she feared the social critic wanted to take her photo and use it for juju.
