Lukarawa's Reign of Terror: Troops Launch Manhunt in Sokoto, Kebbi
Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, visited the Nigerian Army's 8 Division in Sokoto on Sunday to address the growing threat of Lukarawa, a terrorist group recruiting local youth in Kebbi and Sokoto States. The Defence Headquarters recently identified Lukarawa as a new terror group linked to jihadi factions in Mali and Niger, fueled by regional political instability.
During his visit, Oluyede directed troops to dismantle Lukarawa and urged residents to provide timely information to combat insecurity. "We need the community's support to secure our nation and pave the way for economic prosperity," he emphasized. Oluyede met with local leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, and encouraged troops to continue their efforts.
Lukarawa has been active in the region for over six years, imposing taxes, punishments, and enforcing religious rules. Recently, they've extended control, launching violent attacks, including a raid on Mera community in Kebbi State, killing 15 locals. Governors of Kebbi and Sokoto States have assured action against the group, noting their sophisticated weaponry and presence in five local government areas.
In response, the Nigerian Army deployed troops under Operation Fasan Yamma to restore order, while the Nigerian Air Force conducted airstrikes targeting terrorist camps in Kebbi and Zamfara. The Arewa Consultative Forum has called for decisive government action against Lukarawa, emphasizing the need to review Nigeria's security strategy to prevent unchecked growth, as seen with previous insurgencies .
