US FORMALLY WITHDRAWS FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

The United States has formally submitted its withdrawal from the World Health Organization amid growing numbers of Coronavirus cases in the country, an American Senator said.

U.S. Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, disclosed in a tweet on Tuesday, July 7 that

Congress has received a notification to that effect.

"Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the @WHO in the midst of a pandemic.

To call Trump's response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn't do it justice. This won't protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone," Senator Menendez said in a tweet.

There are conflicting reports on when the withdrawal would take place. According to a CBS report, the removal will take effect on July 6, 2021, while a report from The Hill says it will take effect on Monday.

This withdrawal follows through President Donald Trump's threat to sever ties with the World Health Organisation over its handling of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The U.S. President on May 29 announced that he was pulling America out of the U.N. health agency.

Trump had repeatedly accused the WHO of not doing enough to curb the early spread of the virus insisting that the world health agency has "failed in its basic duty," and had instead acted "China-centric."

"China has total control over the World Health Organization," the president declared.

President Trump had earlier claimed that he had seen evidence that COVID-19 originated from a lab in China, an accusation that China denied.

The U.S. has been the most affected country by the Coronavirus pandemic with 133,756 thousand deaths and more than 3 million recorded cases in the country as of July 7.
