CORONAVIRUS: DONALD TRUMP CUTS TIES WITH THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

US President Donald Trump on Friday, May 29, announced that he has severed ties with the World Health Organisation over its handling of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Trump had earlier written a letter threatening to stop funding the world health agency if it did not commit to "major substantive improvements" of its handling of COVID-19 within 30 days.

"Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization," Trump said.

The move will be a major blow to the WHO as the US is its highest financier, contributing more than $400m in 2019.

Trump had repeatedly accused the WHO of not doing enough to curb the early spread of the virus insisting that the world health agency has "failed in its basic duty," and had instead acted "China-centric."

"China has total control over the World Health Organization," the president declared.

President Trump had earlier claimed that he had seen evidence that COVID-19 originated from a lab in China, an accusation that China denied.

The US has been the most affected country by the COVID-19 over a hundred thousand deaths and more than 1.7 million new cases as of May 29.
