LEGISLATIVE AIDE BREAKS INTO LAWMAKER’S OFFICE, STEALS US DOLLARS

A legislative aide, Kabir Lawal, has been caught breaking into another member’s office in the House of Representatives.

Lawal, who is the assistant to a member of the House of Representatives, Mustafa Saidu from Adamawa State, broke into the office of Kano State lawmaker, Kabiru Idris on Friday.

The culprit, who had already stolen some US Dollars, was arrested with the aid of a closed-circit television camera installed in the office of Mr Idris.

A CCTV footage that surfaced online showed Lawal allegedly opening a shelf in the office, as well as video where he was being interrogated over the act, which he confessed to have committed.

Kabiru Idris, Chairman of the House Committee on Civil Society Organisations and Donor Agencies, disclosed that the legislative aide to one of his colleagues allegedly broke into his office on the fourth floor after using several keys, barely 15 minutes after he left the office.

The lawmaker said: “He put off the light in my office but I was able to keep an eye on it. I set my cameras live. I could see him online. He used different keys. I could see from the camera, he was struggling to open the door and this was less than 15 minutes after I closed from the office. Basically, he was monitoring my movement. There and then, we now saw how he came into the office. We have all the videos.”

Saidu is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), while Idris is a member of the All Progressives Congress (PDP).

Eyewitness account reveals that Lawal had allegedly paraded himself as a journalist in the course of extorting money from politicians and visitors from the Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

The suspect has been handed over to the National Assembly management for further action.

Recall, in May, the office of Benjamin Kalu, spokesman of the House of Representative, was burgled by unknown persons.

Kalu lamented that the complex was no longer safe for lawmakers anymore, as his office was ransacked, while the perpetrators carted away cash and items, Eons Intelligence reports.

In January 2019, the offices of three members of the National Assembly were looted within a week. The affected lawmakers included Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos West Senatorial District; and Mr Muhammed Gausu Boyi, representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State.
