138 MEMBERS TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 ACROSS NYSC CAMPS

138 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have tested positive for COVID-19 across all orientation camps in the country.


The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this on Monday at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja.


Ihekweazu explained that at least 34,685 people were tested for the infection, but 138 returned positive and they have been isolated.


The NCDC DG said that those whose samples were collected included corps members and NYSC officials in various camps.

He said:“We tested over the last few weeks a total, so far, of 34,785 people of which we found a total of 138 positive only.”


“So, we have a total prevalence of 0.4 per cent; in fact, about one in 200 new people coming into the camps turned out to be positive.


“None of them were allowed into the camp; all of them were excluded and either managed at home or the treatment centre depending on if they had symptoms and what state they were in,” the NCDC boss added.


Speaking on the efforts made to curtail the spread of the disease, Ihekweazu said four vaccines had already been announced.


Dr Ihekweazu stated that while these have brought excitement, there were lots to consider to guide decisions on which to go for when they became available.

Present at the briefing was the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, who also briefed newsmen about the update on COVID-19 infections, treatment, and fatalities.


Nothing that the infection is still in the country, Dr Ehanire urged the Nigerians to present themselves for testing.


He also reiterated the dedication of the PTF in fighting against the spread of the infection and also monitor cases in other parts of the world.


He hereby assured the general public that the vaccines would be made available to them as soon as they are ready.


Speaking on the strange deaths in Delta and some other States, the Minister revealed that they were as a result of yellow fever.


Eons Intelligence on November 10 reported that eight persons have died from a yellow fever outbreak in Ganjuwa Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State.


Also at least 30 persons have died in Delta, while 57 casualties have been recorded in Enugu.
