BAFARAWA ON INSECURITY: ONLY HEARTLESS, CLUELESS PRESIDENT WILL CHOOSE A BOOK LAUNCH OVER PEOPLE'S LIVES

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa has joined the long list of Northern political elites who have expressed disgust over President Muhammadu Buhari’s Aministration's failure to visit the people of the State over the burning alive of travellers by bandits in particular, and the break down of law and order due to the activities of terrorists in general.

Bafarawa said this in an interview with BBC Hausa Service over the weekend. He also said President Buhari had failed to address the growing insecurity and killings in Sokoto and the entire region. He accused the President of not placing enough premium on the lives of the same people who massively voted him into power. He said it is inconceivable that the President chose a book launch over the lives of his supporters in the State.

“The way the lives of our people are being treated as worthless is the most disturbing thing. See the lives lost just within the last four to five days. People were burnt in a vehicle after they were shot, but President Muhammadu Buhari went to Lagos for a Book launch. A book that is neither the Qur’an or the Bible. It is just a Biography. He did not come to Sokoto to commiserate with us over the lives we lost but he sent some people to represent him.

“When he was campaigning, he didn’t send anybody to represent him, he came by himself. That was because he wanted to be elected. What stopped him from coming to console with the people? But he went to Lagos for a Book launch.

“We only depend on God for protection. It is only on God that we depend for his protection, not anybody. We are sad and disappointed with the way Buhari’s administration is treating our region. Whenever a Governor or a President is sworn in, he swears with the Qur’an or the Bible that he will protect the lives and properties of the people. Nobody says that the people will be responsible for the protection of their lives and properties.

“The leader who swore that, he can do it, by going to the people in their villages and houses and asked them to vote for him, must fulfil that promise. The saying that, security is everybody’s business is true, but the onus rests with the leader, like President Muhammadu Buhari who swore with the Qur’an to protect their lives.

“The poor are ready to lay down their lives to protect the life and dignity of his fellows. But he was not protected to do it. Take for example the bandits shooting and killing people, they have guns and our people have no guns and they don’t even know where to get it from", the former Governor lamented.

In a separate but related development, the President was also been roundly criticized as being insensitive to the plight of the masses as plans for his son's Turbaning ceremony simmered through social and traditional media platforms days ago.

Stakeholders have wondered why a President who is supposedly shouldered with the responsibility of security the lives and property of his people shluld choose a worthless ceremony over the lives of many.

"Nothing can be more insulting to us by the father than accepting the ceremony to go on. The Emir of Daura, obviously, for whatever gain, can not also be more insensitive. I hope they all realize it's the wrong time for fanfare", an anonymous respondent said.

Critics say the fact that Yusuf Buhari is scheduled to be turbaned as TALBAN DAURA this week amidst the rising insecurity in the North further exposed the insensitivity of the President to the plight of his people.

Other social media users also slammed the Daura Emirate Council for what they described as sycopancy and insensitivity of traditional institutions.
