Bandits Invade Kwara Community, Burn Emir’s Palace, Abduct 10 Residents

Bandits have attacked Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, setting part of the Emir’s palace ablaze and abducting at least 10 residents during a coordinated overnight assault.

The attack reportedly occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen invaded the community and simultaneously targeted the Emir’s palace and the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters.

Report indicates that the attackers set a section of the palace on fire before abducting several residents, including women, children, and some of the Emir’s wives, before fleeing into nearby forests.

Police officers stationed at the divisional headquarters reportedly resisted the assault and successfully repelled the attackers from overrunning the facility after an exchange of gunfire.

The latest incident has heightened tension across parts of Kwara State, coming barely 48 hours after gunmen reportedly attacked a church vigil in Ekiti Local Government Area, where three worshippers were killed and several others abducted.

In response to the Yashikira attack, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, reportedly ordered an intensive rescue and manhunt operation to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims.

Security sources disclosed that a joint team comprising police operatives, military personnel, forest guards, and local vigilantes has been deployed to surrounding forests as search-and-rescue efforts continue.
