Bandits Kill 5 Residents and Soldier, Attack Two Communities in Plateau State
In a deadly assault on Monday, suspected bandits attacked Zurak community in the Bashar district of Plateau State, killing at least five residents and one soldier. The attack also left three soldiers missing after a gun battle with the assailants, who had been deployed to provide security in the area due to escalating banditry and kidnapping.
According to Daily Trust, the attackers first targeted Sabon Gari community in Bashar district, setting several houses on fire before advancing to Zurak. Shapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, confirmed the attacks, stating that the body of the slain soldier was transported to Jos on Tuesday morning.
Jibrin Isa, a resident of Zak community, described the assault, explaining that the bandits arrived in large numbers, overwhelming the security personnel stationed in both communities. Isa reported that the attackers initially targeted the military checkpoint in Sabon Gari before raiding the commercial area, looting shops and carting away food and other valuables.
Following the attack on Sabon Gari, the bandits proceeded to Zurak, where they again attacked a military checkpoint, killing five residents and one soldier. Three soldiers remain unaccounted for.
The violence has left Zurak community deserted, with residents fleeing to neighbouring villages in fear of further attacks.
