CUSTOMS SEIZE N175.6M WORTH OF CANNABIS, EXOTIC CARS, HANDS OVER ILLICIT DRUGS TO NDLEA

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Niger/Kogi Area Command, have intercepted 283 wraps of cannabis sativa (marijuana) valued at N5.66 million and nine exotic cars worth N170.16 million.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Pascal Chibuoke, disclosed this during a media briefing in Minna, Niger State, on Monday, October 7, 2024. He noted that the seizure was made possible through credible intelligence.

"On Saturday, May 29, 2024, the Kogi outstation patrol team intercepted a used Honda Accord with registration number FKJ 878 DJ, valued at N5,444,460, along the Lokoja-Abuja expressway, due to suspicion of conveying prohibited items."

While searching the vehicle, the driver abandoned it and fled into the bush to evade arrest. This triggered the interest of the operatives, leading to the discovery of 283 wraps of cannabis sativa (marijuana) with an estimated DPV of N5,660,000.

In anti-smuggling efforts, the command seized nine exotic cars and other vehicles, valued at N170,160,267. Additional seizures included 104 jerry cans of premium motor spirit (PMS), valued at N416,000, which were auctioned due to their inflammable nature.

Comptroller Chibuoke warned those involved in illicit drug trade that the Command will continue to collaborate with the NDLEA to disrupt their activities. He praised his officers' dedication and promised rewards for exceptional performance.

"I urge smugglers to find legitimate businesses, as my officers will bring you to justice," he cautioned.

Commander Shehu Gwadabawa, NDLEA Niger State Commander, thanked the Nigeria Customs Service for their cooperation and assured continued synergy between the agencies.

Similar interceptions have been made in other regions, including Kwara, where 1,153 parcels of cannabis sativa were seized ¹ ². The Nigeria Customs Service has demonstrated its commitment to combating illicit drug trade and smuggling across the country.
