Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns on Health Grounds
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from his position, citing health reasons.
In a resignation letter dated December 1 and submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former minister explained that his decision was compelled by medical concerns requiring urgent attention.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Abubakar’s contributions to national security during his tenure. A formal communication is expected to be sent to the Senate later in the week to announce his replacement.
Badaru, 63, previously served as the Governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His exit comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details on implementation expected to follow.
