EDO GOVERNMENT SUSPENDS SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND HOUSE MASTER OVER VIRAL STUDENT ABUSE VIDEO

The Edo State Government has suspended the principal of Edo College, Benin City, Mr. Peter Edomwonyi, over a viral video showing some senior students of the school abusing their juniors.

A video had emerged online capturing some senior students of the School severely whipping a junior student with belts, after which they came down on him with blows and kicks. Another junior student could be seen stripped naked as the seniors continued to abuse them.

This prompted a reaction from the Edo State Government, who decided to suspend the School’s Principal, in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie Esq.

Oge said the State Ministry of Education, on enquiry, discovered that the incident took place at the college premises and involved Senior Secondary School students of Akenzua Hall of Residence, who are writing their National Examinations Council (NECO) final examination.

The SSG, who described the video as ‘disturbing’, noted that it exposes the incompetence of the Management of the school authority and the immoral behaviour of the students who carried out the abusive action.

The suspended Principal is to hand over all property, assets of the school in his possession to the Vice Principal of the school and to remain on suspension until the investigation of the incident is concluded.

The Government also suspended the House Master of Akenzua Hall of Residence, Mr. Oamen Stanley, indefinitely.

The statement reads; ”All the students involved in the abusive behaviour have been handed over to the Ministry of Justice for investigation and prosecution in accordance with the Child Rights Law.

”The Edo State Ministry of Health is reaching out to the victims to ascertain the state of their health and provide the necessary support.

”The Edo State Government is committed to maintaining a school environment that is safe for children and offers apologies to the victims of the abuse, their parents and members of the public.”
