END SARS: STOP STREET PROTESTS AND COME TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE- BUHARI APPEAL TO YOUTHS
President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerian youths to stop street protests and join conversations on how to end police brutality in Nigeria.
Buhari made this appeal through the FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, on Sunday, November 1 in Abuja during a youth day celebration.
The President, who acknowledged the citizens' right to protest, said it is ready to listen to "concrete and practical ideas," from the youths.
"You must realize that protests cannot last indefinitely. My government will not lift a hand to stop or suppress you.
"However, the fact of the matter is that other forces and actors will seek to take over your protests that they may redirect them in ways you did not intend and perhaps do not agree with.
"Every successful protest movement the world over has understood that there comes a time when activity must move from the street to the negotiation table. That time for you has come. Do not be afraid of this reality. You should welcome it.
"It is important that we all strive to use this moment constructively. Too many people have already sacrificed too dearly. It is our duty to use this fateful situation to move ourselves to a more just and caring society.
"As youth, you have a nation and a future to build. My government will always be your faithful partner in this essential and patriotic endeavour," President Buhari said.
Recall that youths across the country led protests calling out for the absolute dissolution of the police unit SARS who were notorious for extrajudicial killings, harassment, and extortion.
However, things took a violent turn following video footage of soldiers shooting at peaceful protesters on October 20.
Hoodlums took over streets across the country looting shops and causing Mayhem.
According to the Inspector General of Police, 71 public warehouses and 248 privately owned stores were looted in 13 states and the FCT while 205 police stations were burnt and 22 police officers killed.
