GLOBAL WARMING: UP TO 3 BILLION PEOPLE MAY LIVE IN AREAS TOO HOT TO HANDLE IN THE NEXT 50 YEARS, RESEARCH SAYS
A recent study has shown that if the earth continues to warm at the same intensity in the next 50 years, 1 to 3 billion people might live in areas too hot for humans.
Humans, as well as plants and animals, have lived for thousands of years in a “climate niche” with a mean annual temperature favourable for living organisms to flourish.
The research published on the website of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on May 4 shows that if the business-as-usual climate change scenario continues till 2070, billions of people will be living in conditions hotter than those that have allowed life to thrive for the past 6,000 years.
According to the research carried out by an international team of archaeologists, climate scientists and ecologists, “global warming will affect ecosystems as well as human health, livelihoods, food, security, and economic growth in many ways.”

One of the predicted consequence according to the study is that a to 2 °C increase in earth’s temperature when compared with 1.5 °C, “is estimated to increase the number of people exposed to climate-related risks and poverty by up to several hundred million by 2050.”
