GOVERNOR ZULUM BANS ECOMOG POLITICAL THUGGERY GROUP IN BIU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno State has extended his ban on ECOMOG political thuggery group to Biu Local Government Area of the State.


Zulum had since July 2019 launched a ‘cash for sanitation’ programme through which each of the 2,862 registered members of ‘ECOMOG’ an outlawed political thuggery groups were paid N30,000 between July and December (six months) to abandon thuggery and clear the streets where it was major menace.


Going tough on Biu, the Governor on Friday, 22nd January 2021, directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone parading his or herself as political thug to terrorize residents of the State.

“The Commissioner of Police, the Director SSS, and all the security establishment are hereby directed to arrest anyone that paraded himself as ECOMOG as from 6:00 am tomorrow.” 


He also said, “any politician who is sponsoring such thugs shall be dealt with accordingly.” Zulum said.


Earlier in January 2021, Governor Zulum stated that N515 million was spent on getting political thugs off the streets of Maiduguri metropolis.


Meanwhile, some residents of the State have criticized the decision of the Governor, insisting that the ban should be imposed across the State and not only on Biu.


Some residents however claimed that Biu LGA has gained notoriety for political thuggery making the latest ban a highly welcomed development.
