HOPE AS EVER GIVEN CONTAINER SHIP BLOCKING SUEZ CANAL REFLOATS

Ever Given, the giant cargo ship blocking Egypt’s Suez Canal causing long tailbacks in the waterway has been partially refloated and has been turned in the “right direction,” according to Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA)

The massive container ship ran aground in high winds, blocking one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes last week Tuesday, causing long tailbacks in the waterway with at least 360 vessels waiting to pass through the vital trade international including dozens of container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels

“The position of the ship has been reorientated 80 percent in the right direction. The stern … moved to 102 metres [35 feet] from the shore,” compared with its position four metres [13.1feet] from the shore previously, Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chief Osama Rabie in a statement.

Although the news of the partial refloating of the Ever Given Vessel is good, it is still uncertain when the ship would be moved to free the waterways.

Experts have warned that completing the refloat would not be easy and the containers aboard the ship might have to be removed.

Boskalis CEO Peter Berdowski told Dutch public radio on Monday that a new tug would arrive and water would be injected under the ship’s bow to help free it, but if those efforts did not work containers might have to be removed.
