IGP CONDEMNS POLICE EXTORTION, VOWS TO PUNISH ERRING OFFICERS
Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has publicly condemned the alleged cases of extortion and high-handedness by some members of the Nigeria Police Force. Speaking at a recent conference with senior police officers in Abuja, Egbetokun emphasized the need for proper supervision and adherence to professional conduct .
Egbetokun has ordered special units, including the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, and Complaint Response Unit, to conduct routine checks on officers across the country to curb misconduct and corruption. He warned that erring officers will face severe punishment, and supervisory officers will be held accountable for any lapses .
The IGP also addressed the issue of officers using his name and other senior officers' names to extort money from the public. He stressed that such actions will not be tolerated and will result in severe disciplinary measures. Egbetokun reaffirmed the police force's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, unprofessional behavior, and misconduct .
To combat these issues, Egbetokun urged citizens to report any instances of exploitation or extortion. He highlighted the crucial role citizens play in collaborative policing and encouraged the public to exercise caution when dealing with officers.
