IGP Launches Safe School Protection Squad in Delta State, Hosts Stakeholders Forum on School Security

In a decisive move to enhance the safety of schools across the nation, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has launched the Safe School Protection Squad in Delta State. Represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 Benin, AIG Salman-Dogo Garba, the IGP also flagged off a two-day stakeholders forum and training session on April 22, 2025, focusing on the theme: “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities in the Protection of Education.”

The forum, which concluded on April 24, brought together security experts, education professionals, and ICT specialists, who delivered insightful presentations aimed at enhancing strategies to protect learning environments.


Dignitaries present at the event included the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu; Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.), CFR, mni, represented by the Obi of Obulunor; as well as service commanders, school administrators, students, members of the vigilante groups, and representatives from civil society and youth organizations.

In his address, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the critical role of the Safe School Protection Squad in responding rapidly to school-related threats and emergencies. He described the squad as a central pillar of the national Safe School Initiative, comprising specially trained officers equipped to secure educational institutions.


Speaking during the event, CP Abayomi Shogunle, PhD, fsi, the National Coordinator of the School Protection Squad, outlined the growing security threats facing schools, including kidnappings and facility destruction. He recalled Nigeria’s 2019 adoption of the Safe School Declaration, reaffirming the country’s commitment to making schools safer and protecting the right to education as a foundation for national development.


The Governor’s representative, Dr. Emu, lauded the initiative and praised the police leadership for prioritizing the safety of students and teachers.

To support emergency response efforts, the Nigeria Police Force has established a central command and control center at the Force Headquarters, with a 24-hour emergency hotline: 08077357777, available for reporting school-related emergencies nationwide.


The launch marks a significant step in the collaborative effort to protect Nigeria’s educational institutions and ensure safe learning environments for all students.
