INTERNET DISRUPTED IN MYANMAR AMID MILITARY COUP, STATE COUNSELOR AUNG SAN SUU KYI DETAINED

Internet connectivity fell drastically in Myanmar on Monday morning following indications of a military coup and detention of some Government authorities including State counselor, AungSan Suu Kyi.

The military said it carried out the detentions in response to fraud in last November’s general election which Aung San Suu Kyi won by a landslide.

Reports indicate that Myanmar‘s military seized power in a coup against the democratically elected Government of Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained along with other leaders of NLD party early this morning.

The disruption in internet services began around 3am with national connectivity reducing to 75% and subsequently 50% by 8am.

Phone lines to the capital city, Naypyitaw, and the country's commercial centre, Yangon, were not reachable. Also, State TV went off air hours before parliament for the first time since the National League for Democracy (NLD) emerged victorious in the November election.

“With the situation we see happening now, we have to assume that the military is staging a coup,” Myo Nyunt, a spokesman for the NLD, told newsmen Monday.
