MEASLES OUTBREAK HITS NIGER STATE
A measles outbreak has occured in 14 Local Government Areas (LGA) amid the Coronavirus pandemic in Niger State.
The LGAs affected include Bosso, Chanchaga, Munya, Kontagora, Mariga, Mashegu, Rafi, Gbako, Shiroro, Tafa, Suleja, and Lavun.
Dr Fatima Abdullah, the Director, Immunisation and Diseases Control, made it known to journalists during a one-day media orientation on measles immunisation awareness yesterday in Minna.
The Director revealed that during the COVID-19 lockdown, most nursing mothers did not take their children to health facilities for periodic immunisation.
She said; "Even though the health facilities were opened for 24 hours services, many parents failed to take their children for routine immunisation because they were afraid of contracting coronavirus.
“All services such as routine immunisation, antenatal and family planning were available to serve everyone, but most mothers failed to access the service during the lockdown."
