Police Debunk Claim: Viral Schoolgirl Smoking Video Not from Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force has responded to a widely circulated video showing a school-aged girl smoking what appears to be cannabis while surrounded and cheered on by her peers, clarifying that the incident did not take place in Nigeria.
According to a statement released by the Force, preliminary investigations indicate that the video, which has triggered widespread concern among Nigerian parents and the public, is not of Nigerian origin. Evidence points to Zimbabwe as the likely location of the incident.
The Police noted that the individuals in the video can be heard speaking in English and Shona—a language primarily spoken in Zimbabwe and parts of southern Africa. Notably, no Nigerian languages or accents were detected in the recording. Additionally, the video’s earliest upload was traced to the Instagram page @rusape_celebs_tv, which is based in Rusape, Zimbabwe.
The Nigeria Police Force has urged the public to avoid spreading unverified content, especially material that could cause unnecessary panic or misrepresent communities. Citizens are encouraged to verify sources and exercise caution before sharing sensitive information.
The Force reiterated its commitment to ensuring the accurate dissemination of information and promoting responsible social media usage across the country.
