Police deny firing live rounds in Orerokpe incident, confirm tear gas injury
The Delta State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that its operatives discharged live ammunition and shot a civilian during an incident in Oviore, Orerokpe, stating that the report is false and misleading.
In a statement, the Command clarified that no live rounds were fired at any point during the incident, which occurred on April 30, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m.
According to the police, a surveillance patrol team from Orerokpe Division was conducting routine operations within Okuodjedjere Community when officers attempted to apprehend a suspected drug user. The situation reportedly escalated after some youths resisted the arrest, creating tension in the area.
To safely disengage and prevent further escalation, the officers deployed tear gas canisters as a non-lethal crowd control measure.
However, the Command disclosed that one of the canisters struck a civilian on the leg during the process, resulting in injury. The victim was immediately taken to a hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, reiterated the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
He emphasized that while the use of non-lethal force is permitted under established guidelines, any misconduct or deviation from standard procedures would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
The police urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on official channels for accurate information regarding the incident.
