Police Dismiss Amnesty International Report as False and Misleading
The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding human rights and operating under the highest professional standards, rejecting claims made in a November 28 report by Amnesty International as false and damaging.
Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, addressed journalists in Abuja, categorically denying allegations that police officers used excessive force on unarmed protesters, resulting in at least 24 deaths across six northern states. Amnesty International also alleged that police personnel caused harm to unarmed protesters in several instances.
“These allegations are not only false and misleading but also a deliberate attempt to incite the public against the police and tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force in the eyes of the international community,” Adejobi said.
In response to the report, Adejobi revealed that the Force had constituted a Special Investigative Panel to verify the claims. He highlighted specific cases mentioned in the report, stating that police investigations contradicted Amnesty International’s assertions. For instance, he noted that no police personnel used grenades in Borno State, as alleged.
“The Nigeria Police Force categorically denies the allegations of excessive use of force as claimed by Amnesty International. These claims are a gross misrepresentation of the actions and conduct of our officers,” Adejobi emphasized.
The Force reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law, calling for accuracy and fairness in reporting by international organizations.
