RIVER BENUE WATER LEVELS RISE: NIHSA WARNS OF FLOOD RISKS, URGES PRECAUTIONS
The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning about the rising water levels of River Benue, which have reached alarming heights over Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This development indicates a heightened risk of flooding in states along the river, prompting NIHSA to urge both state and local governments to take immediate precautionary measures.
In a statement released on Sunday, NIHSA reported: "As of Thursday, September 19th, 2024, water levels at critical stations along the Benue Basin are steadily rising, though still within normal ranges. By Friday, September 20th, the levels continued to rise, reaching flood preparedness levels. Nigerians are urged to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters."
On Saturday, September 21st, 2024, water levels at key stations along River Benue showed a further steady increase, approaching flood levels. NIHSA has warned the 12 flood-prone states to implement measures to manage or direct the floodwaters.
"We appeal to Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters to help mitigate potential floods," NIHSA advised.
