SOUTH AFRICA RECEIVES FIRST CONSIGNMENT OF ONE MILION OXFORD-ASTRAZENECA COVID-19 VACCINES

South Africa has officially received its first shipment of one million Oxford & AstraZeneca COVID 19 vaccines.

The vaccines arrived from India via an Emirate cargo at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday afternoon.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President, David Mabuza, and Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize were present to witness the arrival of the vaccines.

The jabs have been transported to a cold room lab where it would undergo quality checks that may last for about 10 to 14 days.

South Africa procured 1.5 million vaccines from the Serum Institute of India, licensed to produce a vaccine developed by AstraZeneca in collaboration with the University of Oxford.

The second batch of the vaccine is expected to arrive later this month.

President Ramaphosa aims to vaccinate 40 million South Africans to achieve the immunity needed to fight the COVID 19 pandemic that has claimed over 44,000 lives in the country.
