Suicide Bombing at Maiduguri Market Mosque Claims Four Lives, 32 Injured

The Nigerian military has confirmed that the explosion earlier reported at a mosque within Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, was carried out by a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber.

According to a statement by Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), the incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, while Muslim worshippers were observing evening prayers. Preliminary investigations revealed that the attacker detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians at the scene.

Troops, alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), swiftly responded to the incident. The area was immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further casualties, while victims were evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the General Hospital, Maiduguri.

OPHK disclosed that 32 civilians sustained injuries of varying degrees. However, two of the injured later died at the hospital, bringing the total death toll to four. Two other victims are said to be in critical condition, while the remaining injured persons are stable and receiving medical care.

In response to the attack, security agencies have intensified surveillance and security operations across Maiduguri and its environs. The military advised residents to remain calm but vigilant, especially during the yuletide season, and to promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to security authorities.

Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reassured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property across the North-East.
