Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for Deployment of Nigerian Troops to Benin Republic

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional peace support mission.

The President’s request, conveyed to the upper chamber on Tuesday, stated that the proposed deployment follows an appeal from President Patrice Talon after the recent failed coup attempt in the neighbouring country.

According to the communication, the mission aligns with the provisions of the ECOWAS Protocol on regional security cooperation, as well as Section 30(5) of the Nigerian Constitution, which requires consultation with the National Defence Council before troop deployment.

The Senate has referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for prompt deliberation.

Nigeria had earlier provided air support to Benin Republic after the attempted overthrow of its democratic institutions.
