Tragic Tanker Crash in Enugu Claims 18 Lives, Leaves 13 Rescued Amid Fiery Inferno
Enugu State experienced a tragic event on Saturday as a petroleum tanker accident resulted in the loss of 18 lives, while 13 others were rescued from the ensuing fire-related incident.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed this in an official statement.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accident was caused by a brake failure in a petrol tanker carrying premium motor spirit (PMS). This failure led to the tanker losing control and crashing into 17 other vehicles, including another tanker, 15 cars, and a tricycle. The collision triggered a massive fire, which engulfed the vehicles and caused widespread destruction.
Of the 31 people involved in the crash, 10 were rescued with various degrees of injuries, and three escaped unhurt. Tragically, 18 victims were burned beyond recognition.
“A total of 31 people were involved in the crash. Ten were rescued with varying degrees of injuries, while three escaped unharmed. Sadly, the remaining 18 victims were burned beyond recognition,” the statement read.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, who received the preliminary report, explained that the tanker’s brake failure caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the collision and subsequent fire. Eleven vehicles were completely consumed in the inferno.
Emergency response efforts were bolstered by the support of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, senior state officials, police, and other security agencies. Traffic in the affected area has been rerouted to facilitate smoother movement while ongoing efforts focus on clearing the wreckage.
In his statement, the Corps Marshal extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. He also advised motorists to drive cautiously, especially when navigating alternative routes. Meanwhile, investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident are still underway.
