U.S. Deports 135 Migrants to Costa Rica, Including 65 Minors

The United States deported 135 migrants of various nationalities, including 65 minors, to Costa Rica on Thursday, according to the Costa Rican government.

Their flight departed from San Diego, California, and landed at a base near Juan Santamaria International Airport, an AFP journalist confirmed.

Repatriation Process

The deportees, who are set to be repatriated to their home countries, were transported by bus from San José to a migrant facility 360 kilometers (224 miles) away, near the Panama border.

According to Costa Rica’s Deputy Interior Minister, Omer Badilla, all 65 minors were accompanied by a relative, and none of the individuals on the flight had a criminal record.

Migrants from Diverse Nationalities

The group included individuals from:

  • Afghanistan
  • China
  • Iran
  • Russia
  • Armenia
  • Georgia
  • Vietnam
  • Jordan
  • Kazakhstan
  • Ghana

Regional Agreements on Migrant Deportations

Costa Rica, Panama, and Guatemala have agreed to receive migrants deported by the U.S. and hold them until they are either sent back to their home countries or relocated to other host nations.

Last week, 299 deported migrants landed in Panama, with around 100 transferred to the San Vicente refugee camp in Meteti, located in Darien’s jungle province.
