UN Reports Over 200 Child Deaths in Lebanon Amid Escalating Israeli Airstrikes
The United Nations has revealed that over 200 children have died in Lebanon since September due to intensified Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah. The alarming figures were shared by James Elder, a spokesperson for UNICEF, during a recent press briefing, where he condemned global inaction in the face of escalating violence.
“On average, three children are killed every day, with over 1,100 injured in just two months,” Elder stated, likening the crisis to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The conflict escalated after Hezbollah launched rockets in support of Hamas, prompting retaliatory airstrikes from Israel.
Lebanese officials report that more than 3,510 people have been killed since the clashes began, with civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, severely affected. Elder highlighted the disproportionate impact on health workers, noting that over 200 have been killed and 300 injured in the ongoing conflict.
He also warned of a growing global desensitization to the violence, cautioning, “The intolerable is becoming acceptable, and the appalling is slipping into the expected.”
