VP Shettima Expresses Sympathy Over Civilian Casualties in Military Airstrikes

Ten civilians lost their lives on Wednesday, December 25, during military airstrikes targeting a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgent group in two communities within Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

In response, Vice President Kashim Shettima extended his heartfelt condolences to the affected families, acknowledging the tragic loss of innocent lives. In a statement issued by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a rare but painful occurrence in the ongoing fight against terror.

“I must say we are deeply sorry and dismayed by the civilian casualties and the excruciating pain caused during these challenging times,” the Vice President said.

Shettima offered condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of the deceased, and called for understanding and support for the armed forces. He emphasized the sacrifices made by military personnel, who risk their lives daily to protect civilians and rid the nation of terror.

“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to continue supporting our brave troops in their operations to ensure a safer Nigeria for all. The courage and dedication of our military, coupled with the resilience of our people, will lead us to victory against these heinous threats,” he said.

The Vice President stressed the importance of cooperation from local communities, urging them to provide accurate intelligence to help security forces differentiate between civilians and insurgents.

Shettima assured the people of Sokoto and Nigerians at large of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism. He reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s determination to create a peaceful Nigeria where citizens can live without fear of attacks.

“Security is a collective responsibility. Together, we will overcome these challenges and build a nation where farmers can freely tend their fields, and all Nigerians can go about their daily lives without fear. Rest assured, this administration is resolute in its efforts to eliminate all remnants of terror elements from our land,” Shettima concluded.
