Dangote Refinery: Cheap Fuel Imports Threaten Nigerian Lives, Vehicles"
Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief of Branding and Communications at Dangote Refinery, has refuted claims by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) that they can import Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at a lower price. According to Chiejina, Dangote Refinery’s pricing is competitive and aligned with international market rates, suggesting that any PMS sold at a lower price likely involves substandard products.
Chiejina stressed that such low-quality imports could threaten the health of Nigerians and reduce vehicle lifespan. He pointed out that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) lacks the laboratory facilities necessary to identify these substandard products.
Dangote Refinery's pricing is based on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation's (NNPC) rates, set at N971 per liter for ship sales and N990 per liter for truck sales. Recently, the refinery has even reduced its price to N960 per liter for ship sales, while maintaining the truck sale price at N990 per liter.
Furthermore, Chiejina cautioned that an international trading company has leased a nearby depot to blend and distribute substandard products, posing a competitive threat to Dangote’s higher-quality offerings.
