Fire Engulfs Two Fuel Tankers Near Yola International Airport Adamawa
A fire outbreak on Tuesday consumed two petrol-laden tankers at an MRS filling station along Numan Road, opposite the Jezco filling station, near Yola International Airport.
As the inferno raged, curious residents rushed to the scene, blocking the main road into Yola, the Adamawa State capital, despite the obvious dangers.
Firefighters arrived and began efforts to contain the rapidly spreading flames, but reports indicate they ran out of water midway through the operation. Security personnel were also deployed to secure the area and prevent further escalation.
Recurring Tanker Explosions Amid Fuel Crisis
The incident comes at a time when petrol has become a scarce commodity in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, which is grappling with its worst economic crisis in decades.
Recent major tanker explosions include:
- January 2025: 11 people killed along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway after a tanker lost its brakes, tumbled, and exploded.
- January 2025: 86 people killed, 55 injured in Niger State while scooping fuel from a fallen tanker.
- January 2025: Five fatalities in Agbor, Delta State, after a petrol tanker lost control and burst into flames.
- October 2024: Over 170 dead in a Jigawa State fuel tanker explosion.
- September 2024: 59 people killed in northwestern Niger State after a fuel tanker collided with a truck carrying passengers and cattle.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the Yola fire and assess potential risks to nearby structures and residents.
