MALI: CNSP MILITARY JUNTA TO HOLD NATIONAL CONSULTATIONS ON THE TRANSITION OF POWER

The National Committee for the Salvation of People (CNSP) on Thursday confirmed that it would hold national consultations on the transition of power from September 5 to 12.

The CNSP Military Junta made this announcement during a press statement on Thursday, September 3, stifling rumours of another postponement.

Recall that the CNSP earlier scheduled to hold the national consultations on the transfer of power on August 29 and invited civic groups, political organisations and former rebels to Bamako, but cancelled at the last minute, citing organisational reasons.

Speaking on the logistics of the consultation, the spokesperson for the CNSP, Colonel Ismaël Wagué said the meeting would now hold in Bamako and other regional capitals of the country.

The CNSP military junta are under pressure to return power to a civilian government after removing former President Boubacar Keita in a coup on August 18.

The soldiers, who claimed to have taken over power due to the high level of insecurity and corruption in the country announced that it had no intention of holding on to power and would return power to civilians within a reasonable time

However, in discussions with ECOWAS, the military junta expressed their intention to hold on to power for three to two years, a stance the West African bloc rejected.

The 15-member state of the West African bloc has shut borders against Mali, stifling financial and economic transaction in the Sahel state, a move that is affecting millions of Malians struggling to make money for food amid COVID-19.

During a virtual meeting held on August 28, ECOWAS decided that sanctions imposed on Mali would be reviewed consequent on actions taken by the CNSP military junta.
