COVID-19: LAGOS MAY RUN OUT OF BED SPACES IN THREE WEEKS – AKIN ABAYOMI

Lagos State may not have enough bed space to admit Cooronavirus patients in the next three weeks, according to the State’s Commissioner of Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.

He said if the current rate of infections keeps rising, the State might run out of bed spaces.

“If we carry on with the rate of positive testing that we are obtaining, we’re going to run out of isolation beds in our established isolation facilities,’’ Prof Abayomi told reporters in Ikeja today.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) records say total infections in the country rose to 11,844 on Friday with Lagos recording 5,663 cases.

The Health Commissioner explained that Lagos State has been conducting more COVID-19 tests and have been discovering more Coronavirus patients.

As of May, Lagos had conducted over 16,000 Coronavirus tests and is building capacity to test a minimum of 1,000 per day; Prof Abayomi told journalists.

“We’ve been testing more. We’ve been escalating our capacity to test for COVID-19 and what we’ve found is that the more we test, the more we find, which is a reflection of the fact that COVID-19 is spreading within the community and we’re finding more cases than we can manage eventually when we project,” he said.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, as of June 6th, 2020, Lagos had recorded 5,633 cases of OVID-19.

Of the 5,633 cases, 4,694 are active and are on admission, 902 discharges have been made, and 67 deaths have been recorded.
