Tinubu Appoints Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who stated that the appointment followed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun earlier in the day.
According to the statement, President Tinubu acknowledged receipt of Egbetokun’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his years of service to the Nigeria Police Force, commending his dedication and efforts toward strengthening the country’s internal security framework.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
Onanuga said the President is confident that Disu’s operational experience and leadership record will provide steady direction for the police during what he described as a critical period.
In accordance with the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency reiterated its commitment to strengthening national security institutions and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
