AS LAGOS COVID 19 FIGURES RISE, DOCTORS BEGIN WARNING STRIKE

Doctors in Lagos State have embarked on a three-day warning strike effective Monday, July 13, the Medical Guild in the state have said.

The Chairman of the Guild, Dr Oluwajimi Sodipo, said the doctors decided to down tools over issues concerning their welfare and safety.

However, Dr Sodipo noted that doctors working in COVID 19 isolation centres are exempted from the industrial action.

While addressing the press on Sunday, July 12, he said doctors working in COVID 19 isolation centres are currently being owed two months salaries. Speaking on why the Doctors in the state are going on strike, the Chairman said:

“After robust deliberations, the Council observed that the following were some of the unresolved demands of the Guild.

“They include wage disparity between Federal and Lagos State doctors which was not being given attention, the issue of COVID-19 hazard allowances and inducement allowances as approved by the Federal Government which have not yet been domesticated by Lagos State for her doctors; that the doctors working in the isolation centres were still being owed two months’ allowances which have not been paid as at the time of the meeting.”

“There were also concerns that they (the doctors) were unceremoniously disengaged without recourse to their welfare.”

Lagos has the highest documented cases of COVID 19 in Nigeria with 12,427 confirmed cases. 10,358 patients are currently on admission, and 172 persons have died from coronavirus complications.
