ONE DEAD AS EBOLA RESURFACES IN DR CONGO

One person has been confirmed dead in Dr Congo (DRC) as authorities announce the re-emergence of the Ebola virus infection, months after the outbreak was declared over.


This was announced in a statement by the DRC Ministry of Health on Sunday. 


The Health Ministry said the victim contracted the virus in Butembo, a city which was one of the epicentres of the previous viral outbreak in the country.


“It was a farmer, the wife of a survivor ofEbola, who showed typical signs of the disease on February 1,” he added.


She died on February 3, after which a sample of her blood tested positive for Ebola, the health ministry said.“We have another episode of the Ebola virus” in the Biena health zone of North Kivu province, Health Minister Eteni Longondo told state television RTNC.

During the previous Ebola outbreak in Dr Congo which ended in June 2020, 3,481 persons were infected and 2,299 died.


It is pertinent to mention that the new Ebola case could obstruct the country's fight against the Coronavirus pandemic which has infected 24,600 patients and killed 681 persons.
