Nigeria and other exempted from US 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) List with Key Updates
The United States has announced the list of eligible countries for its 2025 Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), introducing some notable changes. While the United Kingdom has been excluded from general eligibility, it remains eligible under specific conditions.
Notably, no African countries — including Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa — were included in the updated list.
A significant highlight of the 2025 update is the addition of Romania, reflecting the US government’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and prioritize countries with strong border security standards.
According to the US Bureau of Consular Affairs, the VWP allows citizens or nationals from participating countries to travel to the US for tourism, business, or transit for up to 90 days without a visa.
The bureau emphasized: “Travellers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval before travel and meet all outlined requirements. Those who prefer a visa in their passport can still apply for a visitor visa.”
The 2025 VWP brings updated travel policies and permit eligibility criteria, simplifying visa-free entry and easing access for business and tourism.
