AT LEAST 10 HERDSMEN HAVE BEEN KILLED IN EBONYI- MIYETTI ALLAH
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) on Thursday, October 1 said at least ten herdsmen had been killed across Ebonyi State between May and September 2020.
Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, the Southeast Zonal Chairman of MACBAN, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria NAN in Enugu while lamenting about the rising insecurity in Ebonyi State.
Two Herdsmen were killed, and another two were injured while at their camp in Ukwuachi Forest, Ishieke, Ebonyi local government in the State on Monday, September 28.
Philip Maku, the Police Commissioner of Ebonyi who condemned the attack said the deceased were siblings and they were attacked and murdered around 9 pm while they were asleep.
Alhaji Siddiki told newsmen that the Herdsmen in Ebonyi are peaceful and have maintained a cordial relationship with their host communities, until recently.
He further said he was perplexed to see that some women were mobilised to protest against them despite the losses the herders have incurred.
Siddiki stressed that the only thing the herders want is peacefully live with their host communities.
Responding to the security threats on Herders in Ebonyi, the State Command Spokesperson DSP Loveth Odah, confirmed to journalists that some herders had been victims of insecurity in the State.
She, however, added that herdsmen are not the only ones being attacked by hoodlums in the State.
Reacting to the September 28 attack, DSP Odah said investigations are still ongoing. She, however, stressed that it would be misleading to assume the indigenes of Ebonyi carried out the attack as outcomes of some previous investigations had shown that herders sometimes also carry out similar attacks.
