CAMEROON CUSTOM OFFICIALS INTERCEPTS OVER 200 EXPLOSIVE DEVICES TRANSPORTED FROM NIGERIA

Customs in Cameroon on Saturday intercepted over 200 improvised explosive devices transported into the country from Nigeria.

The officials who are part of a special customs unit for the fight against illicit trade called HALCONI intercepted the explosives during a routine stop and search at a village called Pakete, in Gashiga, in the northern region of Cameroon.

The North Commander of HALCONI, Jude Mufor, told reporters that the explosives were transported via a Toyota Starlettte coming into Cameroon from Nigeria.

He said the custom officers suspicions grew when the vehicle refused to stop for a routine check.

Jean Abate Edi, Governor of Cameroon's northern region, said a test conducted on the seized explosives confirmed that they were highly dangerous.

The governor said investigations are ongoing and the military has been reinforced along the Nigerian border.

He added that he suspects the explosives were either brought in to cause mayhem in Cameroon or was being transported to the African Republic.
