Female-Led Criminal Network Busted in Kano: Five Suspects Arrested
Operatives of the Kano State Police Command has dismantled a female-led syndicate of thieves, arresting five suspects linked to the group. The operation was carried out by a special intervention squad under the directive of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba.
The principal suspect, Shamsiyya Adamu, a 19-year-old resident of Brigade Quarters, Kano, was apprehended on December 21, 2024, following a series of complaints about stolen mobile phones in Unguwa Uku Quarters. Reports revealed that the syndicate employed a tricyclist and a cybercriminal to facilitate their operations, which targeted unsuspecting residents across Kano Metropolis.
The syndicate specialized in deceiving housewives to steal mobile phones and subsequently used the stolen devices to swindle money from victims' bank accounts. Among the arrested suspects are Idris Yusuf, a 23-year-old tricycle rider who transported Shamsiyya during her operations; Al'asan Dahiru, a 24-year-old who disposed of stolen items; Abdulmajid Haruna, a 27-year-old buyer of stolen properties from whom six mobile phones were recovered; and Salim Auwalu, a 21-year-old expert in extracting money from victims' bank accounts.
Six mobile phones have been recovered so far, and investigations are ongoing to retrieve more stolen devices. The police have also received 30 complaints from victims, including 29 women and one man, all of whom identified Shamsiyya as the perpetrator responsible for stealing their phones throughout 2024.
The police have assured the public of their commitment to combating criminal activities in the state and urged residents to remain vigilant while reporting suspicious activities promptly.
