ICPC Confirms Nasir El-Rufai's Detention Amid Ongoing Investigation
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is currently in its custody in connection with an ongoing investigation.
According to a statement from ICPC’s Head of Media and Public Communications, John Odey, El-Rufai was taken into custody as of the close of work on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. However, the ICPC has not disclosed specific details regarding the case.
El-Rufai's arrest follows a series of allegations against him, including claims of financial improprieties during his tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023. These allegations include the diversion of N423 billion in public funds, which was flagged by the Kaduna State House of Assembly in 2024, prompting calls for an investigation.
The former governor has also faced accusations related to the unlawful interception of phone communications belonging to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. These allegations are linked to claims made by El-Rufai that he overheard instructions for his arrest due to a phone tapping incident.
El-Rufai is also facing charges under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003. No date has been set for his arraignment.
El-Rufai's legal team is yet to respond to the ongoing developments, but the case is drawing considerable attention as it unfolds.
