Kaduna Abduction: Church Confirms Death of Venerable Edwin Achi

An Anglican priest, Venerable Edwin Achi, who was abducted alongside his wife and daughter in Kaduna State, has been confirmed dead while in captivity.

The attack occurred on 28 October 2025, when armed criminals stormed Nissi community in Chikun Local Government Area and kidnapped the family from their residence. The abductors initially demanded N600 million in ransom before later lowering the demand to N200 million.

The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announced the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, 26 November 2025, noting that the clergyman’s death was a painful loss to the church and all who knew him.

“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna announces the passing of The Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero,” the statement said, adding that he was remembered for his humility, devotion, and dedicated service.

The Diocese also confirmed that his wife and daughter remain in captivity, and called for continued prayers for their safe return. It further disclosed that the church’s annual Standup for Jesus 2025 programme has been cancelled in honour of the late priest.

The tragic news emerged hours after the kidnappers released photos of the family in captivity. According to relatives, including Achi’s nephew, the abductors had threatened to kill the couple if the ransom was not paid.

Authorities and community members continue to call for urgent action to secure the release of the remaining victims.
