BRICKLAYER CONVICTED AND SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT OVER SEXUAL ASSAULT

A bricklayer, Gabriel Awaye, has been handed two life sentences in prison by the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court. This verdict comes as a result of his conviction for defiling a 13-year-old girl in his room.

Justice Abiola Soladoye, presiding over the case, determined that the prosecution successfully demonstrated the defendant's guilt in both counts of defilement and sexual assault. She emphasized that the defendant's brazen disregard for decency made him unfit for civil society, justifying a life sentence for his actions. The survivor testified that she was lured to the defendant's location under false pretenses and was subsequently sexually assaulted. The court found her testimony credible and supported by corroborating evidence.

The defendant's attempt to distance himself from the crime was dismissed as untruthful. In addition to the life sentences, the judge ordered the defendant's name to be registered in the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register. The trial included three witnesses presented by the state counsel, Ms Abimbola Abolade, while the convict testified as the sole witness.

The crimes were committed on June 2, 2021, on Agbawaye Street, Command, Agbado Oke-Odo, Lagos, and are in violation of Sections 127 and 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
