Nigerian Army Declares MASSOB Memorial Directive Illegal, Warns Against Unauthorised Gatherings in South-East
The Headquarters of Operation UDO KA has described a directive allegedly issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), calling on churches across the South-East and parts of the South-South to hold memorial services for victims of the Nigerian Civil War, as unlawful and capable of threatening peace in the region.
In a statement, the military said while it recognises the pain and sacrifices endured by families affected by the civil war, there are already officially recognised national events established by the Federal Government to honour fallen heroes and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the unity of Nigeria.
According to the statement, occasions such as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Nigerian Army Day Celebration, and Nigeria’s Independence Day provide lawful avenues for remembrance, national reflection, and unity.
Operation UDO KA noted that the memories of those who lost their lives during the conflict remain significant in the country’s history, stressing that honouring them should be done within legal and nationally recognised frameworks.
The military, however, warned that any attempt to organise activities outside approved national commemorations could create unnecessary tension and disrupt the prevailing peace across the South-East.
The statement further alleged that sympathisers of MASSOB and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were behind the directive, accusing them of attempting to create panic and instability within the region.
Residents, religious leaders, youths, and members of the public were advised to avoid participating in any unauthorised activities linked to the directive.
Operation UDO KA reassured churches and residents across the South-East that they remain free to conduct their lawful activities without fear, while warning that anyone found disrupting public order or religious gatherings would face legal consequences.
The military also reiterated that the Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, remain committed to protecting lives and maintaining peace and stability throughout the South-East region.
