Troops arrest suspected gunrunner in Plateau, rescue kidnap victim in Edo

Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected gunrunner and recovered firearms in Plateau State, while a separate operation in Edo State resulted in the rescue of a kidnapped man.

In Plateau, troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE, working with vigilantes and local hunters, conducted an intelligence-led raid on Kisayi and Dogon Daji settlements in Bassa Local Government Area.

The operation followed the abduction of Dr Abraham Owoicho on 19 August 2026. Several occupants reportedly fled into nearby bushes when the troops arrived.

A 30-year-old woman, Halima Ibrahim, was however arrested while allegedly attempting to escape with two AK-47 magazines.

A subsequent search of her residence in Kisayi B Village led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a locally fabricated revolver, a military jungle hat and three mobile phones. Preliminary findings indicated that the AK-47 allegedly belonged to her husband, identified as Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, in Edo State, troops working with the Edo State Security Corps ambushed suspected kidnappers along the Afawosa–Iyora Road in Etsako West LGA.

The troops reportedly spotted the suspects moving with a captive at Powerline Uzairue and engaged them, forcing the kidnappers to abandon the victim and flee.

The rescued man, identified as 35-year-old Mohammed Oboarekpe, told the troops that he was abducted from his residence in South Ibie on 20 August 2026.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling kidnapping and arms-trafficking networks through intelligence-led operations conducted in collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders.

The public was urged to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies to support efforts to protect communities and combat criminal activities.
