Nigerian Government Withholds Monthly Allocation to Rivers State"

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, has suspended the October Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue payment to Rivers State, citing a court order as the basis for its decision. This development occurs amid a conflict between Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Bawa Mokwa, spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, explained that the decision was made in compliance with a court order prohibiting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the federal government from disbursing monthly allocations to Rivers State. The order was secured by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, through an originating summons filed against Governor Simi Fubara's administration.

The Amaewhule faction alleges that the state executive has not complied with a Federal High Court directive to re-present the 2024 appropriation bill to their faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Mokwa confirmed on Friday that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) would uphold the court order until a contrary directive is issued. He reiterated the government’s commitment to due diligence in handling the matter.

The FAAC is responsible for distributing revenue to federal, state, and local governments across the country. Mokwa stated, “The October 2024 FAAC allocation has not been distributed yet. The Federal Government will abide by the court order concerning Rivers State’s allocation. Unless a contrary order is issued, the current status remains unchanged.”

He also noted that the disbursement process for the October 2024 allocations is ongoing.
