YOSHIHIDE SUGA ELECTED JAPAN’S 99TH PRIME MINISTER
Yoshihide Suga has been elected as Japan's 99th Prime Minister.
His appointment comes after the resignation of his predecessor, Shinzo Abe, in August due to worsening health issues.
Suga, the country’s former Chief Cabinet Secretary, was elected by the Japanese Parliament after his victory under the Liberal Democratic Party on Monday, September 14th, 2020.
The 71-year old, who has vowed to continue his predecessor’s legacies, is set to announce his cabinet later today.
“I will create a cabinet that works for the people,” Suga said.
The new Prime Minister is now faced with the immediate challenge of tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in the country and a battered economy.
In the second quarter of the year, Japan’s economy; the world’s third-largest, contracted by 27.8 percent due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Suga has vowed to implement protocols that would prevent the further spread of COVID-19 while protecting jobs and restoring the economy.
As of September 16th, 2020, Japan has so far confirmed 75,958 Coronavirus infections and 1,451 deaths.
